The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to review the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having space and opportunity to reposition for a simpler attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
