The Journey of a Movement can be marked by specific steps.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or coaches present a revolutionary approach that promises a panacea for struggling players.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to storm the compound overseas. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from the sidelines. A lone figure, exposed, nervous, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT written on his body as a symbol, has emerged through the lines and is taken aside with discretion to a different team at Derbyshire.

Do you ever miss the beginning, when optimism reigned? The era of early Bazball, of pure instinct.

2. Love-Bombing

Movement founders promise a reboot, hope for a future, camaraderie, salvation within a community with shared faith in the method.

What did it represent at first? A team united feeling good. Body art. Forearms. Determination. Peak performance vibes. Admittedly, The team often say it’s not a real term, amusingly since it’s not recognized, what did we see?

However, everyone understands what it is. It’s the player playing a shot so depraved it’s beyond belief. It’s the thrill of the leader in his final form, a demeanor suggesting: pensive Nordic god, strong features, natural look, genuinely raw you almost imagine to look down and find him positioned at mid-off stripped to the waist embracing nature.

It’s the opener continuing to have permission speaking publicly, out there looking like a cheerful animal smartly dressed, uttering phrases such as we’re breaking down traditions. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was uplifting.

3. A New Life

Development stage. Togetherness strengthened through repetition of mantras. These ideas may seem irrational to prove commitment.

Is it just me? The criticism, the anger, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat feels overblown, overdone. The performance was poor during the match, as is typical there. They were savaged defensively during a brief period as the bowling and captaincy fell apart, manipulated by the batsman imitating their style effectively, responsive to the situation, an athlete shining with brilliance.

Currently, we see the pile-on, the anger, the sense of English Test cricket as a kind of abomination. The consensus is that England don’t just need to lose, they need to lose righteously, to be purged, flame-throwered, overwhelmed by the vengeful purity of the pace attack, the low-fi orthodoxies of the veteran, marking his wickets modestly like he’s just been given a nice new fishing rod. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Issues emerge because of mistakes. Yet, mistakes are denied. It turns to hostility externally.

In truth, approaching the next match, we are at an intriguing moment in the story of this thing. England could quite easily win overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. More likely, defeat could come swiftly. And if they do lose it seems we may see the final stage.

Before that happens, there are two things to note about this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. Criticism followed, which proved the point because everyone knows how to confirm something definitely isn’t a cult is if supporters send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages rejecting criticism of the beliefs.

What has happened in the last few days are equally notable. Opposition to the style is now the trend. Social media is furious, angry English pundits, pictures of upset supporters abroad missing out on play, similar to people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, claiming, your cherished traditions and have developed as one way of separating yourself culturally from us, it’s just a joke in the end old boy.

And this is the real point. Everything is a cult. Bazball was a cult because cricket is a cult. In fact, the sport in England is closed, a clique, a private event, an insular community with a long history of ceremonial past defining it. Historically, this was where influence is guarded. It’s the colonial game of the nation, the original sports washers. And surprisingly, Britain is itself a cult, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a place that literally still has a king.

England’s cricketers have been isolated in this system for years. Attempting to break free, to create a less brutal environment, they are mirroring their upbringing, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with 15 cool guys and a leader who wants you to be yourself provided you conform.

Live where your feet are. Run towards the danger. But no matter how fast and far you run, you remain stuck.
